Mid-20th Century Italian Sorrento-Style Marquetry Work Table
Description
An Italian Sorrento-style marquetry table, likely dating from the mid-20th century. The table is constructed with walnut and mixed wood veneers, featuring an octagonal hinged top with clipped corners. The exterior is decorated with an intricate multi-coloured hardwood marquetry inlay depicting a central floral bouquet surrounded by a foliate scroll border. The top opens on a piano hinge to reveal a fitted interior with several shallow compartments, suitable for sewing notions or as a jewellery box. The structure is raised on four slender, tapered cabriole legs, which feature decorative marquetry scrollwork to the knees. A lock mechanism is fitted to the front. While similar Sorrento-ware tables often contain musical movements, no mechanism is immediately visible in the provided images.
