Imperial Prussian Observer Badge
Description
This is an Imperial Prussian Observer Badge (Beobachter-Abzeichen), an award instituted in 1914 for qualified aerial observers. The badge is of multi-piece construction, featuring a die-struck base metal frame with a silvered finish. The central motif consists of a square enamelled shield with a red border and a quarterly checkered black and white centre, representing the coat of arms of the House of Hohenzollern. This shield is set against a raised sunburst pattern. The central element is enclosed within an oval wreath, composed of oak leaves on the left and laurel leaves on the right, which are joined at the base by a tied ribbon bow. The top of the wreath is surmounted by a Prussian royal crown. The reverse is plain with a horizontal pin-back assembly consisting of a needle pin and a simple C-clasp. No maker marks or silver hallmarks are visible on the reverse.
