Description

An Austro-Hungarian Silver Bravery Medal (Silberne Tapferkeitsmedaille) from the First World War period, issued during the reign of Emperor Karl I (r. 1916–1918). The obverse features the right-facing profile of Emperor Karl I in military uniform. The surrounding Latin inscription reads CAROLVS D.G. IMP. AVSTR. REX BOH. ETC. ET REX APOST. HVNG. The base of the bust is marked KAUTSCH for the medallist Heinrich Kautsch. The reverse displays the central inscription FORTITVDINI (For Bravery) within a laurel wreath, superimposed over six furled standards. The award is suspended from a triangular-fold ribbon in white with red horizontal ladder-style stripes.
