Description
A Turkish Crimea Medal, a campaign award from the Crimean War (1854–1856), issued by the Ottoman Empire to allied forces. This specimen is the Sardinian issue, frequently awarded to British personnel when supplies of the British version were unavailable. The obverse displays the tughra (imperial monogram) of Sultan Abdülmecid I within a laurel wreath, with the Islamic date 1271 (1855) below. The reverse features a trophy of arms comprising a cannon, anchor, and the flags of the allied powers, with the British Union Jack positioned to the right of the trophy. The exergue is inscribed LA CRIMEA 1855. The silver medal is privately engraved on the edge in block capitals A. HUNTER. It is suspended by a ring from a 32mm wide replacement ribbon of the correct pattern, featuring a crimson centre with narrow green edges.
