French Dunkirk Medal 1940 Commemorative Award
Description
This is a Dunkirk Medal, known in France as the Médaille de Dunkerque, which is a commemorative award established in 1960 by the town of Dunkirk to honour Allied veterans who served in the Dunkirk sector between May and June 1940. The medal is struck in a bronze-toned metal alloy. The obverse features a central shield bearing the coat of arms of the city of Dunkirk, depicting a lion rampant over a fish. This shield is set against two crossed swords and is encircled by a laurel wreath. The reverse features a plain circular field with the raised inscription DUNKERQUE 1940 and a small symbol of a burning oil lamp above the date. The medal is suspended from its original yellow fabric ribbon, which features two broad red stripes. A small paper inventory tag with the handwritten number 9703 is attached to the ribbon.
