The obverse features the Royal Cypher of King George VI, GRI VI, surmounted by a crown and surrounded by a circular band inscribed THE AFRICA STAR. The reverse of the medal is plain. Attached to the ribbon is a brass clasp embossed with the text 1ST ARMY, indicating service with the First Army during the North African campaign between November 1942 and May 1943.
