Lot 376:
Seth Thomas Adamantine Sonora Chime Mantel Clock, Circa 1910
Description
A substantial upright mantel clock produced by the prestigious Seth Thomas Clock Company. The rectangular case is finished in the manufacturer’s patented Adamantine veneer, a high-grade celluloid developed in the late 19th century to provide a durable, high-lustre finish mimicking expensive woods. This example features a deep reddish-brown tone resembling polished mahogany, accented by architectural tiered moulding at both the crown and the plinth. The circular dial is housed within a polished brass bezel and features a cream chapter ring with stylised Arabic numerals and a central metallic disc with two winding apertures. This model is part of the celebrated Sonora Chime series, which was highly regarded for its superior acoustic quality. The case is further ornamented with two brass finials mounted to the upper moulding. Measurements: Approximately 20 inches in height.
Condition report:
The wooden case is in good structural condition, showing minor surface wear including light scuffs, scratches, and accumulated dust consistent with age. The Adamantine finish retains a good level of shine. The brass bezel and finials exhibit natural oxidation and a developed patina. The dial shows some age-related discolouration and minor marks. The mechanical movement and chime function are untested; the clock is sold as seen and may require professional servicing to restore full horological functionality. A small inventory sticker is present on the lower front of the case.
