Lot 101:
American School, 19th Century, 'Study of a Gnarled Tree Trunk'
Description
American School, 19th Century. Oil on stretched canvas. A naturalist study of a massive, gnarled tree trunk with prominent root structures spreading into a reddish-brown forest floor. The composition focuses on the sculptural texture of the bark, rendered with smooth, blended brushwork, set against a more dappled and atmospheric background of forest foliage. Unsigned. Unframed. Provenance: Private collection. 14 x 18 inches.
Condition report:
Fine, stable craquelure is present throughout the composition, most notably within the more heavily pigmented areas of the tree trunk. No significant paint loss or inpainting is visible under normal light. There is a visible layer of accumulated surface dirt and the varnish appears to have yellowed with age. The stretched canvas is well-tensioned, though it shows minor wear and rubbing along the unframed edges.
