Late 19th Century Renaissance Revival Carved Oak Mirrored Back Sideboard
Description
A large late 19th-century Renaissance Revival mirrored-back sideboard constructed from dark-stained oak. The overmantel features a central rectangular bevelled mirror within a carved frame, flanked by two tiers of recessed panels. These panels are decorated with high-relief carvings of fruit clusters, including grapes and pears, and are separated by turned and carved baluster supports. The upper section is surmounted by a heavy, stepped cornice featuring deep foliate carvings. The base section comprises a rectangular top over a single central drawer and an open niche, flanked by two side cupboard doors. The drawer front and door panels are heavily embellished with scrolling acanthus leaves, shells, and central grotesque masks. The vertical stiles and horizontal rails are finished with a continuous carved border of overlapping leaves and husks. The sideboard is supported on four large turned bun feet. The interior layout includes two side cupboards and a central open niche below the drawer. A single metal keyhole is visible on the right-hand cupboard door.
