A Mid-Victorian Gilt-Tooled Leather Bound Bible Dated 1856
Description
This mid-Victorian Bible is bound in pebbled black leather featuring ornate gilt-tooled decoration. The front cover displays a central gilt emblem composed of a cross with a radiating glory, a chalice, a shield bearing the monogram I H S, and a volume inscribed H O L Y B I B L E resting upon clouds, all enclosed within a border of repeating cruciform and trefoil motifs. The reverse cover is blind-stamped with the inscription S T P E T E R ‘ S , N O T T I N G H I L L , 1 8 5 6 . and a vertical stamp along the outer edge reading P R E S E N T E D B Y T H E S O C I E T Y F O R P R O M O T I N G C H R I S T I A N K N O W L E D G E . Two white rectangular adhesive labels are affixed to the front cover: one marked 501 and another reading SHELBYS AUCTIONEERS LOT 363.
