A 9 Carat Gold Wakefield Metropolitan District Civic Consort's Badge, 1983
Description
A 9 carat yellow gold civic medallion for the Wakefield Metropolitan District, serving as a consort’s badge of office. The piece consists of an ornate openwork medallion suspended from a matching gold bow brooch fitting. The central circular section features the coat of arms for Wakefield in relief, including a shield with a chevron and three martlets, flanked by a lion and an eagle supporter, all topped with a mural crown. A scroll below the crest is embossed with the motto PERSEVERE AND PROSPER. This is enclosed by a decorative border of foliate scrolls and three ribbons embossed with the words WAKEFIELD METROPOLITAN DISTRICT. The reverse of the medallion is flat and engraved in block capitals MRS R CROXALL 1982-1983. The reverse also bears a series of five struck marks: a rectangular cartouche containing the initials JRG&S, a crown gold standard mark, the purity mark 375 indicating 9 carat gold, an anchor assay office mark for Birmingham, and the lowercase date letter i for 1983. The suspension brooch is fitted with a simple hinged pin and safety catch.
