A collection of Dutch souvenir and English topographical ceramic tiles
Description
A collection of glazed ceramic tiles featuring various Dutch and English architectural and commemorative scenes. The group includes two identical polychrome tiles depicting a timber-framed building, inscribed ‘Old Coach House Stratford’ along the lower edge. A circular blue and white tile features a central scene of a windmill and sailboat within a foliate border, inscribed ‘CLARKSON’S’ and ‘250,000 th’. Another blue and white tile reproduces Rembrandt’s painting ‘The Night Watch’, with the Dutch inscription ‘De ‘Nachtwacht’ naar Rembrandt’. A further blue and white tile depicts a town square and building, inscribed ‘STADHUIS DELFT’. A polychrome scenic tile shows a windmill, cottage, and swans in a landscape, inscribed ‘Holland’ in cursive script. The final tile is a monochromatic blue scene depicting a figure at a workbench outside a thatched cottage. Several adhesive labels are present on the surfaces: a white adhesive label on the reproduction painting tile is printed with ‘333’, ‘SHELBY’S AUCTIONEERS’, ‘LOT’, and ‘ELLENBROOK’; a small white adhesive label on the circular tile bears handwritten text ‘12547 / Delft / tiles’; and one of the Stratford tiles has a small cream adhesive label reading ‘Age 1.50’.
