Two Framed Artworks Comprising a Michael Turner Military Print and an Oil Copy of The Laughing Cavalier by Frans Hals
Description
The first item is a framed commemorative print on paper after an original painting by Michael Turner. The subject matter depicts Challenger 1 main battle tanks of The Royal Scots Dragoon Guards in a desert landscape during the 1991 Gulf War. The paper margin at the lower right features the printed inscriptions: The Vanguard of Victory 1991 – 25th February 1991, The Royal Scots Dragoon Guards on the Kuwaiti Desert Border, and From an original painting by Michael Turner. The print includes a printed Michael Turner signature. It is housed in a contemporary dark wood frame with a gilt-tone inner fillet and an off-white mount under glass.
The second item is a twentieth-century oil or acrylic painting on board, being a stylized copy of the 1624 portrait The Laughing Cavalier by Frans Hals. The portrait depicts a man in seventeenth-century Dutch attire featuring a flamboyant black hat, an elaborate lace ruff, and a highly decorated doublet. The work is set within a contemporary heavily moulded gilt composition frame decorated with scrolling acanthus leaves and floral motifs. A small white adhesive lot label marked 140 is attached to the top centre, and an inventory or price label marked 12,950 is located at the bottom centre.
