Description
This maritime scene is executed in watercolour with gouache highlights on paper, depicting a small fishing vessel navigating turbulent, wind-whipped seas near a rugged, mountainous headland. A second vessel is visible on the horizon beneath a dramatic, cloud-filled sky. The work is rendered in a traditional 19th-century British maritime style, emphasizing atmospheric light and the movement of the water. The piece is signed in the lower left corner F. WALTERS and dated 1873. Identification markings on the mainsail of the foreground boat appear to read T.H. 3. The work is presented under glass within a wide, gold-painted mount and housed in a moulded gilt wood frame.
