Lot 282:
Japanese Imari Porcelain Charger, Hand-Painted Landscape and Floral Panels, Late 19th Century Meiji Period
Description
A large Japanese Gold Imari porcelain charger of circular form, decorated in the traditional palette of underglaze cobalt blue, overglaze iron-red, and gilt. The composition features a central circular medallion containing orange and blue floral motifs, encircled by six radiating wedge-shaped panels. These panels alternate between finely detailed polychrome mountain landscapes featuring pagodas and coniferous trees, and stylised floral arrangements. The piece displays the characteristic vitreous glaze and intricate hand-painted detailing associated with Arita production during the Meiji era. The charger is currently held in a metal wire plate hanger. Provenance includes a previous sale at Shelby’s Auctioneers, as indicated by the lot label 282 and a secondary tag 501.
