Description

A Victorian presentation walking cane featuring an L-shaped carved ivory handle with decorative notched detailing to the underside. The handle is mounted upon an ornate, wide white metal collar, likely silver or silver plate, decorated with intricate repoussé and chased floral and foliate scrollwork. The collar bears a central cartouche with a crisp engraved presentation inscription reading: PRESENTED TO Mr. Thos. Hunter by the members of the LEEDS TIN PLATE WORKERS SOCIETY 11th Augt 1872. The polished hardwood shaft, likely malacca, displays a warm reddish-brown finish and terminates in a simple metal ferrule. This piece represents a significant historical link to 19th-century British trade unionism. No hidden system features are present. Potential buyers should be aware of international and local regulations regarding the sale and transport of antique ivory. Length: 91 cm.
