An Edwardian Carved Oak Banjo Barometer and Thermometer
Description
A wall-mounted banjo-style weather station set within a dark-stained, carved oak frame. The frame is decorated with turned circular motifs at the top and bottom terminals and scrollwork around the central dial. The instrument features a circular aneroid barometer dial behind glass, displaying weather conditions including Stormy, RAIN, Change, FAIR, and VERY DRY. The dial is further inscribed with meteorological instructions: FALLS FOR WET OR MORE WIND S.W. LY N.W. S.W. and RISES FOR DRY OR LESS WIND N.E. LY N.W. N.E. It is equipped with two hands: a black indicator hand and a brass setting hand. The neck of the frame houses a vertical thermometer with a red spirit-filled glass tube, featuring dual scales for FAHRENHEIT, ranging from 20 to 120, and CENTIGRADE, ranging from -10 to 50. No maker’s name or manufacturer’s marks are legible on the instrument faces or the wooden casing.
