Lot 231:
A Collection of Denby Greenwheat Pattern Stoneware Tableware
Description
A collection of stoneware tableware in the Greenwheat pattern, attributed to Denby. The service features stylized hand-painted wheat stalks in shades of forest green and iron-red on a cream-coloured ground, accented with dark green banded rims. The collection includes a large rectangular serving platter with rounded corners, several stacks of dinner plates, salad plates, and side plates, a large circular twin-handled lidded tureen, a small twin-handled lidded bowl, and a small white ceramic shaker. The lidded serving vessels are finished with solid forest green glazes and central knops. Originally designed by Albert Colledge for the Langley works in the 1950s, this set represents a classic example of mid-century British ceramic design. No factory backstamps are visible in the photograph, though the pattern and form are highly characteristic of the manufacturer.
