Lot 407:
An Assortment of Green-Glazed Majolica-Style Earthenware and Commemorative Methodist Plates
Description
A collection of 19th-century ceramics comprising green-glazed earthenware and black transfer-printed commemorative plates. The green-glazed section includes several circular plates featuring a deeply moulded sunflower or chrysanthemum pattern with a central floret and radiating overlapping petals. This specific pattern is widely attributed to Wedgwood majolica production. Also present are two large shell-shaped dishes with radiating ribbing and scrolling handles. All the green-glazed items are finished in a translucent, vibrant leaf-green lead glaze that pools in the recesses of the relief decoration.
The commemorative portion of the lot consists of a group of white-bodied earthenware plates featuring black underglaze transfer prints celebrating the Primitive Methodist Connection, dating to the mid-19th century. The central well displays portraits of the movement’s founders, including Hugh Bourne and William Clowes. The borders are decorated with foliate vines and include inscriptions such as THE LITTLE CLOUD and YE MUST BE BORN AGAIN. JOHN III. 7.
An auction house sticker with the number 9798 is visible on one of the sunflower plates. No manufacturer marks are discernible on the upper surfaces of the items.
