A Pair of Polychrome Woodblock Prints after Katsushika Hokusai, from Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji
Description
A pair of polychrome woodblock prints (ukiyo-e) after Katsushika Hokusai (1760-1849), from the series Fugaku Sanjurokkei (Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji). The left print depicts Soshu Hakone kosui (The Lake of Hakone in Sagami Province), showing a lone boat on the water with the iconic silhouette of Mount Fuji in the background. The right print depicts Koshu Misaka suimen (Surface of the Water, Misaka, Kai Province), illustrating the mountain reflected in the surface of the lake. Both prints contain rectangular cartouches in the lower-left corner featuring the series title, individual print title, and the artist’s signature Zen Hokusai Iitsu hitsu. These examples are later editions or reproductions, displaying characteristic polychrome woodblock registration and stylised landscape elements. Both works are housed in matching dark-stained wooden frames with gilded inner slips and are protected behind glass.
