A Pair of Victorian Mahogany Balloon-Back Hall Chairs
Description
A pair of mid-Victorian mahogany hall chairs in the balloon-back style, dating to approximately 1860. Each chair features a characteristic rounded balloon frame with a central horizontal splat decorated with carved scroll motifs. Unlike common dining chairs of the period, these examples feature solid wooden seats with a slightly recessed centre and moulded edges. The chairs are supported by ring-turned and tapered front legs and simple out-swept sabre legs to the rear. No maker’s marks or stamps are visible on the frames. Two modern adhesive identification stickers are present on the top rail of one chair.
