French Model 1866 Chassepot Yataghan Sword Bayonet
Description
A French Model 1866 sword bayonet, designed for use with the Chassepot bolt-action needle-fire rifle, dating from the mid-to-late 19th century. The weapon is characterised by a recurved yataghan-style steel blade featuring a single broad fuller. The hilt is constructed with a ribbed brass grip and includes a spring-loaded locking catch at the pommel. The iron crossguard is fitted with a muzzle ring and a distinctive recurved, hooked quillon. A modern white rectangular inventory sticker with the digits 8814 is present on the blade. Original manufacturer stamps or engravings, typically found on the blade spine or crossguard, are not clearly identifiable due to the current surface condition.
