Lot 469:
Two South Asian Brass Decorative Items Including a Shiva Nataraja Sculpture and a Hand Bell
Description
This lot comprises two metal items: a cast brass sculpture of Shiva Nataraja and a hand bell with a turned wooden handle. The sculpture depicts Shiva as the Lord of the Dance in the ananda tandava pose, set within a circular flaming prabhamandala or aureole. The deity is portrayed with multiple arms holding a damaru drum and fire, with one hand in abhaya mudra and another pointing towards his raised foot, while standing upon the dwarf demon Apasmara to symbolise victory over ignorance. The figure is modelled in the classic Chola style of Southern India. The hand bell features a polished brass body and a dark, turned wooden handle. A small white adhesive label with the handwritten number 2882 is present on the exterior of the bell.
Width of aureole approximately 30 cm.
