A Trio of European Military Medals comprising Latvian and Soviet Examples
Description
This lot contains three military medals, including two Soviet awards and one Republic of Latvia commemorative issue. The first item is a Latvian 10th Anniversary of the War of Independence Commemorative Medal, established in 1928. The obverse depicts a Latvian soldier in a helmet holding a sword and shield against a rising sun. The reverse is inscribed in Latvian PAR LATVIJU 1918-1928 beneath three stars. It is suspended from a pentagonal mount with a light blue ribbon featuring twin white-red-white stripes. The second item is a Soviet Medal For the Defence of the Caucasus, established 1st May 1944. The obverse features Mount Elbrus, oil derricks, and a formation of tanks, bordered by the Cyrillic text ЗА ОБОРОНУ КАВКАЗА. The reverse bears a hammer and sickle above the inscription ЗА НАШУ СОВЕТСКУЮ РОДИНУ. It is suspended from a pentagonal mount with an olive-blue ribbon featuring central stripes. The third item is a Soviet Jubilee Medal 70 Years of the Armed Forces of the USSR, established in 1988. The obverse shows the profile busts of a pilot, sailor, and soldier with the dates 1918-1988. The reverse is inscribed 70 ЛЕТ ВООРУЖЕННЫХ СИЛ СССР. It is suspended from a pentagonal mount with a red ribbon featuring green, blue, yellow, and grey stripes. All three medals are constructed from brass or bronze-toned base metals.
