Description

A late Victorian mahogany lady’s writing desk, circa 1890, in the bonheur-du-jour style. The superstructure features a central rectangular mirror plate beneath a shaped cresting rail decorated with a carved lyre motif. The mirror is flanked by two small side cabinets, each containing a cupboard door with an intricately carved foliate panel, surmounted by a small gallery. The main writing surface is inset with three panels of green leather featuring gilded tooling. The central leather-clad section is a hinged slope that opens to reveal a fitted interior. This interior contains a bank of three small drawers with light-coloured wood facings, likely satinwood, and a series of six vertical pigeonhole compartments for stationery. The lower section of the desk features three frieze drawers, each fitted with decorative brass swan-neck handles. The piece is supported by four elegantly turned and fluted legs, which are joined by two lower shelves providing additional storage. The desk is mounted on brass and ceramic casters for mobility.
