George V Sterling Silver Sauce Boat, Henry Matthews, Birmingham, 1919
Description
A George V sterling silver sauce boat by the Birmingham silversmith Henry Matthews. The vessel features a gadrooned rim and a flying scroll handle with an acanthus leaf thumbpiece. The body is raised on three cabriole legs with shell-moulded knees and hoof feet. The exterior is struck with a full set of English hallmarks including the maker’s mark H.M, the anchor for Birmingham, the lion passant for sterling silver, and the date letter u for 1919.
