Description
A George III sterling silver spoon produced in the Old English pattern. The reverse of the handle is struck with a full set of London hallmarks. The maker’s mark WE over WF in a rectangular punch identifies the silversmiths as William Eley and William Fearn. The sequence of marks includes the lion passant for sterling silver, the crowned leopard’s head for the London Assay Office, and the lowercase Roman letter c which corresponds to the year 1798. The sovereign’s duty mark featuring the profile of King George III is also present.
