A Victorian Style Hand Painted Maritime Miniature Chest of Drawers dated 1861
Description
A miniature four-drawer desktop chest of drawers decorated in the maritime folk art tradition. The piece features a black painted ground with red and ochre coloured pinstriping and scrolling borders. The top surface is decorated with a circular painted tondo depicting a sailing ship at sea under a sunset sky. The drawer fronts are hand-painted with script reading Ships, Charts, 1861, and Holland from top to bottom. The side panels display the date 1861 within a decorative cartouche. Each drawer is fitted with two brass-toned metal bail handles on circular backplates. The chest is constructed of wood, likely pine based on similar examples, though the primary timber is obscured by the thick painted finish. Internal drawer construction and secondary woods are not visible for inspection. The piece sits on a simple plinth base.
