A Red Japanned Chinoiserie Lowboy in the William and Mary Style
Description
A red-japanned lowboy or dressing table in the William and Mary style. The piece is constructed with a timber carcase finished in a red japanned ground featuring hand-painted Chinoiserie decoration in gilt and polychrome. The rectangular top displays a landscape scene with figures, a boat, and birds, enclosed within a scrolling foliate and diaper-patterned border. The front configuration consists of three drawers arranged around a shaped kneehole apron, comprising one shallow central drawer and two deeper flanking drawers. The drawers are fitted with brass pear-drop handles on circular backplates. The carcase is raised on six turned baluster legs joined by a scrolling shaped H-stretcher, all terminating in turned ball feet.
