Description

A large Japanese porcelain charger decorated in the traditional Imari palette of underglaze blue, overglaze iron-red, and gold, dating to the Meiji period. The central circular medallion depicts flowering peonies and foliage, surrounded by six alternating fan-shaped panels. Three panels illustrate mountainous landscape scenes featuring pavilions, bridges, and pine trees, while the alternating three panels contain large, stylized floral blossoms in iron-red and white with gilded accents. These panels are separated by cobalt blue borders enriched with gilded diaper patterns. The reverse is decorated with simplified scrolling vines in underglaze blue and red. The underside bears three hand-painted characters in iron-red reading Arita-yaki, identifying the piece as Arita ware from the Hizen Province. Three kiln spur marks are visible in the centre of the underside.
Diameter: 47 cm.
