A Japanese Export Black Lacquer Sewing Box, Late Meiji to Taisho Period
Description
A rectangular wooden sewing box featuring a stepped, hinged lid and finished in black lacquer. The exterior is decorated using the maki-e technique with gilt and red pigments, depicting flowering branches and birds. The front is fitted with a decorative brass escutcheon. The interior contains a black lacquered lift-out tray with multiple divided compartments. The underside of the lid is embellished with a stylised gilt-painted iris motif. The box is accompanied by an assortment of vintage sewing sundries, including wooden spools of Silko and Coats thread, a Coats needle pack, a metal thimble, and a heart-shaped embroidered pincushion.
