Lot 142:
A Dutch Delftware Blue and White Peacock Pattern Charger
Description
A large tin-glazed earthenware charger, identified as Dutch Delftware, decorated in the traditional Peacock pattern. The central well features a stylised motif representing a peacock or pomegranate, set against a background of radiating hatched lines. The broad rim is decorated in the Kraak style, an 18th-century European interpretation of Chinese Ming dynasty export porcelain, consisting of alternating panels of stylised flowers and geometric fan-like motifs. The piece is hand-painted in underglaze blue with a yellow-ochre line applied to the outer edge of the rim. The reverse shows a thick, opaque white glaze over a buff-coloured earthenware body. Within the foot rim are three hand-painted marks in underglaze blue, comprising two chevron-like strokes and a mark resembling a numeral 7 with a horizontal base. These are consistent with workshop or painter marks found on 18th-century Delftware.
Diameter: Approximately 34-35 cm.
