Artisan Three-piece Hand-Painted Wooden Romani Vardo Caravan Model Set, Mid-20th Century
Description
This is a finely crafted, artisan-made wooden model of a traditional Romani caravan, specifically a bow-top vardo. The model is constructed primarily of wood and features a vibrant red body with a deep green barrel-shaped roof. The exterior is elaborately decorated in the traditional folk-art style, showcasing hand-painted yellow and gold-toned scrollwork, floral motifs, and detailed horse-head illustrations on the rear panels. The front edge of the roof is finished in gilt paint exhibiting a fine craquelure. The interior is partially furnished, including a miniature wooden cabinet with floral decoration and a small patterned textile rug. The wagon is mounted on four yellow-painted wooden spoked wheels with metal bands. Accompanying the vardo is a hand-painted model of a piebald draft horse, featuring a detailed brown and gold-toned harness system and a wooden hitch. A separate yellow four-step mounting ladder with painted circular accents completes the set. While no maker marks are present, the level of detail and construction suggests a skilled artisan model maker working in the mid-20th century.
