Lot 206:
Two Chinese blue and white porcelain jars and covers, late 19th to 20th century
Description
This lot comprises two Chinese blue and white porcelain vessels, dating from the late 19th to the early 20th century. The larger piece is a temple jar of baluster form, featuring a domed cover surmounted by a pointed finial in deep cobalt blue. The body is decorated in underglaze blue with a central band of lattice-work and ruyi-head borders, with shaped panels containing birds perched amongst flowering peonies and scrolling foliage. The smaller ginger jar is of ovoid form with a flat-topped circular cover, similarly decorated with avian and floral motifs. The combination of birds and peonies is a traditional Chinese motif symbolising wealth and honour. Larger jar height: approximately 43 cm.
