T.H. Brigg & Co., Precision Brass Yarn Testing Instrument, Late 19th Century
Description
A fine late 19th to early 20th-century precision textile testing instrument, manufactured by T.H. Brigg & Co. at Crampton’s, Bradford. Constructed primarily from polished brass, the instrument is mounted on a heavy, moulded mahogany base. The main brass scale is graduated from 1 to 12 inches with finer subdivisions. The right-hand side of the scale is clearly engraved with the maker’s mark: T. H. BRIGG & Co / CRAMPTON’S / BRADFORD. The instrument features a sliding brass carriage operated by a large handwheel, supporting a vertical micrometer dial graduated from 0 to 100 for high-precision readings. A sighting assembly or pointer with a turned wood section is mounted to the carriage. This type of apparatus was typically employed in the Bradford woollen trade for measuring the elongation or tensile properties of yarn and thread.
