Antique Indonesian Carved Hardwood Keris Hilt with Zoomorphic Pommel and Wire-Wrapped Grip, Late 19th Century
Description
This finely crafted hilt, or ukiran, is a distinguished example of Indonesian woodcarving, likely intended for a Keris or similar regional sidearm from Sumatra or the Malay Peninsula. The piece is sculpted from a dense, dark-toned hardwood, featuring a stylised zoomorphic figure at the pommel that draws upon traditional mythological iconography. The grip section is tightly bound in a fine-gauge metal wire, providing both a decorative element and a functional non-slip surface. The intricate relief work across the body of the hilt demonstrates the skill of the artisan, with deep recesses and sharp lines that have softened slightly through decades of handling. Such hilts were often considered talismans, imbued with the spirit of the owner. This specimen retains a rich, dark patina. Dimensions: Approximately 130mm in length.
Condition report:
The hilt is offered in aged, antique condition. There are several notable structural cracks and losses to the wood, particularly concentrated on the protruding elements of the carved pommel and the lower rim. The wire wrap is largely complete, though it shows expected surface dulling and minor loosening in small sections. A modern adhesive inventory label numbered 2819 is present on the wood surface. The item is an isolated hilt and does not include a blade or scabbard.
