Lot 299:
A Victorian Black Lacquered Papier-Mâché and Mother-of-Pearl Inlaid Writing Slope
Description
A mid-Victorian black lacquered papier-mâché writing slope of serpentine form, dating to circa 1860. The hinged lid is centred with a hand-painted floral bouquet medallion, bordered by an oval arrangement of iridescent mother-of-pearl inlays and intricate gilt scrolling accents. The exterior elevations are further decorated with hand-painted floral sprays. The interior reveals a slanted writing surface upholstered in red velvet with gold-tooled borders, alongside a fitted interior featuring stationery compartments and a single black inkwell cap. This piece is characteristic of the high-quality decorative papier-mâché wares produced in English centres such as Birmingham during the 19th century. Width: approximately 30 cm.
Condition report:
The piece is in fair antique condition with wear consistent with age. There is visible craquelure to the lacquered finish across the primary surfaces. Minor losses to the lacquer and underlying material are noted along the edges and corners. The metal hinges and lock plate exhibit typical oxidation. The interior velvet shows signs of use and light fading. One inkwell cap is present; the corresponding glass vessel is not visible.
