Bovril Mechanical Advertising Money Box, Lithographed Tin, c. 1920s-1940s
Description
An original early 20th-century mechanical advertising automaton bank manufactured for Bovril Ltd., London. This rare piece features a lithographed tin-plate body shaped like a classic Bovril jar, mounted on a wooden base. The graphics showcase the iconic strongman imagery, with a central figure lifting dumbbells to form the letter O in the brand name. The jar includes the instructional text A TEASPOONFUL TO BOILING WATER & STIR around the neck and a coin slot in the cap. A secondary lithographed figure of a boxer or strongman stands adjacent to the jar on the base. A metal winding crank is positioned on the side, designed to animate the figures. This item represents a classic example of British commercial art and mechanical toy design from the interwar period. Dimensions: Approximately 8 to 9 inches in height.
Condition report:
The item is in good vintage condition with wear consistent with its age. There are visible surface scratches, small areas of paint loss, and minor oxidisation along the seams and edges of the tin-plate. The lithography remains largely vibrant, though some light fading and surface grime are present. The wooden base shows scuffing and wear to the corners. A white auction lot sticker is attached to the base. Mechanical operation has not been verified. This is an original vintage piece, not a modern reproduction.
