Description

This decorative Anglo-Indian wall pocket or hanging bracket, dating from the late 19th to early 20th century, is a fine example of Hoshiarpur-style craftsmanship. The piece features a dark-toned wooden box-like base, intricately adorned with cream-coloured bone inlays. These inlays are finely etched with traditional floral, foliate, and geometric motifs, concentrated along the borders and central decorative panels. Attached to the wooden reservoir is a large, openwork frame of arched and segmented design, constructed from leather-wrapped wire or bentwood. The frame is secured with decorative lashings, creating a striking silhouette that reflects the Orientalist influence popular in European interiors of the period. An internal inventory sticker marked 6182 is present. Length: approximately 18.5 inches (47 cm).

Condition report:

The item exhibits wear consistent with age and domestic use. There are minor surface abrasions and scuffs to the wooden base. The leather wrapping on the wire frame shows areas of fraying and small losses, particularly at the joints and extremities. The bone inlay remains largely secure with some natural age-related discolouration.
