Lot 279:
Nicole Freres, Twelve-Air Swiss Cylinder Music Box with Floral Marquetry Case, circa 1870
Description
A fine antique Swiss cylinder music box manufactured by the prestigious Fabrique de Pieces a Musique Nicole Freres, Geneve. This specimen, bearing serial number 44361 and reference number G. me No. 2165, features a sophisticated twelve-air programme. The musical selection is noted on the original label as Piano-forte arrangements, featuring celebrated operatic works by composers including Verdi, Bellini, Meyerbeer, Gounod, and Rossini. The internal mechanism is visible beneath a secondary glass dust lid and comprises a substantial brass cylinder acting upon a single steel comb. The exterior rectangular case is crafted from wood, featuring a decorative floral marquetry inlay to the centre of the lid and protective metal-bound corners. The original lithographed programme label is affixed to the underside of the lid, detailing tracks such as Il Trovatore, Norma, and Faust. Length: approximately 51 cm (20 inches).
Condition report:
The wooden case exhibits surface wear, scuffs, and scratches consistent with its age. The interior paper programme label shows characteristic yellowing and minor staining but remains entirely legible. The internal brass and steel mechanical components appear complete and well-preserved under the glass lid, though the movement has not been tested for duration or sonic accuracy. The metal-bound corners show light oxidation. Originality of the comb and cylinder appears intact.
