Description

A Victorian silver-plated folding biscuit box of shell form, manufactured by Wilson & Davis of Sheffield and London, dated 1883. This piece is a refined example of the Aesthetic Movement, featuring intricate engraved decoration of birds amongst foliage, traditional Japanese-style fans, and geometric borders. The box is constructed with a central rectangular swing handle which operates the mechanical action, opening to reveal two semi-circular interior compartments. The lids are finished with two cast butterfly-shaped thumbpieces. The decorative programme reflects the “Japonisme” influence prevalent in English decorative arts during the late 19th century. Width approximately 21 cm; Height (including handle) approximately 24 cm.

Condition report:

The exterior silver plating shows typical surface wear and light scratching consistent with age and use. The interior compartments exhibit significant tarnishing and heavy oxidisation. The folding mechanism and swing handle remain in good functional condition.
