Lot 271:
A Large 20th Century Japanese Style Porcelain Ovoid Vase with Fruit and Ribbon Decoration
Description
A large porcelain ovoid vase of export quality, decorated in the Satsuma style. The body features a pale, streaked greyish-white glaze, providing a neutral ground for hand-painted and gilt-accented botanical motifs. The primary decoration consists of a large cluster of grapes in shades of purple, ochre, and pink, framed by vibrant blue and green foliage and bound by a stylised, gilt-outlined ribbon. Secondary fruit clusters are interspersed around the circumference. The flared rim and circular foot are embellished with gilt borders and scrollwork. The underside reveals an unglazed foot rim with minor surface staining and a central pre-drilled hole, indicating the piece was previously mounted as a lamp base. No maker’s marks are present. Height: approximately 30 cm.
Condition report:
Generally good condition. The base has been professionally drilled for a lamp fitting. Minor surface staining to the unglazed foot rim. Light rubbing to the gilt accents consistent with age and use. No visible chips, cracks, or restoration.
