Lot 263:
An Antique French Napoleon III Thuya Burr and Marquetry Inlaid Serpentine Glove Box
Description
A French Napoleon III period glove box of serpentine form, dating to the late nineteenth century. The exterior is veneered in rich thuya burr, characterised by its dense and intricate grain pattern. The hinged lid features a central inlaid mother-of-pearl escutcheon of cartouche form, framed by a decorative border of geometric marquetry stringing with stylised shell motifs at each corner. The box is constructed with a serpentine-fronted profile and rests upon a flat base. The interior is finished in a natural wood grain and retains its original brass hinges. This type of decorative casket was a hallmark of French Second Empire cabinetry, typically intended for the storage of gloves or personal jewellery. Width: 29 cm.
Condition report:
The box is in fair to good antique condition. There are minor losses to the burr veneer along the edges and corners, alongside surface scuffs and light scratches consistent with age and use. The marquetry and mother-of-pearl inlays remain largely intact. The internal brass hinges are functional and secure.
