Lot 260:
A Large Late 19th Century Dutch Delft Style Blue and White Pottery Wall Plaque After Louis Apol
Description
A substantial circular earthenware wall plaque or charger executed in the traditional Dutch Delft blue and white monochrome palette. The composition depicts an expansive panoramic river landscape, influenced by the works of the Hague School painter Louis Apol. The scene features a large windmill situated on a riverbank, accompanied by masted sailing vessels and a small boat with a solitary figure in the foreground, all set beneath a vast and atmospheric sky. The decoration exhibits the fine detail characteristic of high-quality late 19th-century production, likely utilising a combination of transfer-printing and hand-painted accents. While no maker’s marks are visible on the face, the style and scale are typical of decorative wares produced in the Netherlands during the late 19th or early 20th century. Diameter: approximately 16 inches.
Condition report:
The piece is in good antique condition with expected signs of age and use. There is visible surface wear including light scratches and minor abrasions to the glaze. Small chips are present along the outer edge of the rim. No evidence of major cracks or previous restoration.
