Lot 254:
A Victorian Rogers Smith & Co. Silver-plated Hot Water Urn
Description
A large Victorian silver-plated hot water urn produced by Rogers, Smith & Co. of Connecticut. The piece features a classic urn-form body with a fitted domed lid and a decorative finial, standing upon a square pedestal base with bun feet. The exterior is embellished with elaborate repoussé and chased scrollwork bands, medallions, and gadrooned petal ribbing along the lower section. It is fitted with two large loop handles and a spigot featuring a shell-form thumbpiece. An engraved monogram, potentially “HMS,” is visible on the central body. This item is a characteristic example of mid-to-late 19th-century American silver-plated hollowware. Height: approximately 20 inches (50.8 centimetres).
Condition report:
The item shows significant surface tarnish and oxidation throughout, consistent with age. There is visible wear to the silver plating, particularly on high points of the decoration. No major dents, cracks, or repairs are observed. The lid and spigot remain intact, though the piece would benefit from professional cleaning to restore its original lustre.
