Description

A diminutive Chinese blue and white porcelain wine cup, dating from the late Qing Dynasty to the Republic period. The vessel is finely decorated in underglaze blue with a bird perched amongst flowering branches to one side, contrasted by a vertical block of poetic calligraphic script to the reverse. The top rim is reinforced with a protective dark metal mount, likely paktong, which has developed a natural oxidised patina. The base is characterised by an unglazed foot ring and a recessed glazed centre containing a two-character underglaze blue mark, likely reading Ruoshen (若深). This style of ware was highly regarded for tea and wine service during the late 19th century. Height: approximately 3.5 cm.

Condition report:

The cup is in good overall condition with no apparent chips, cracks, or professional restoration to the porcelain body. The metal rim mount shows surface oxidation and minor wear consistent with age and use. There is minor surface staining to the unglazed foot ring and adhesive residue from a modern inventory label on the exterior.
