Lot 103:
John Smith of Stirling, George III Oak and Mahogany Longcase Clock, circa 1820
Description
A George III period Scottish longcase clock, the dial signed John Smith, Stirling. The clock features an 8-day mechanical weight-driven movement with time and strike complications, striking on a bell. The case is constructed from oak with decorative mahogany cross-banding and inlays to the trunk door and base panel. The hood is designed with an arched glazed door flanked by simple pilasters. The painted arched dial displays a rural landscape scene in the arch, with a white face featuring black Roman numeral hour markers and an outer minute track. Complications include a subsidiary seconds dial below the 12 o’clock position and a date aperture above the 6 o’clock position. The corners are decorated with hand-painted floral and foliate spandrels.
Condition report:
The clock is currently untested and sold as seen. The movement appears complete but will require professional servicing to ensure functional order. The wooden case exhibits surface wear, minor scuffs, and age-related marks consistent with its period. The painted dial shows some light crazing and minor losses to the paintwork but remains in legible condition. The pendulum and weights are not visible in the provided image and are assumed missing.
