Lot 49:
Late Victorian/Edwardian Barley-Twist Embroidered Screen Panel
Description
The item is a single framed embroidered screen panel, dating to the late Victorian or Edwardian period. This piece, likely the central component of a larger pole screen or fire screen, is constructed of polished dark wood. The frame features prominent barley-twist turning on the horizontal supports and a pierced scroll-cut handle element integrated into the side of the wooden frame. The central rectangular panel holds fine needlework, executed primarily in silk embroidery on an ivory textile ground. The decoration features a Chinoiserie-style motif depicting a vibrant blue and pink bird perched among flowering branches and foliage. Faint embroidered initials, possibly ‘R.F.’ or ‘B.F.’, are visible on the right edge of the textile ground.
