Lot 45:
Late Victorian Inlaid Mahogany Work Table with Barley Twist Legs
Description
A single late Victorian period work table or sewing box, dating to the late 19th century. The piece is constructed primarily of mahogany or walnut and features a lift-top case with serpentine or scalloped edges. The stand is characterized by four heavily turned legs, consistent with the “barley twist” style identified in research, connected by stretchers. The legs are ebonized or dark-stained, contrasting with the lighter wood of the case. The hinged lid is inlaid with a central oval floral marquetry panel composed of various woods. The case opens via brass hinges to reveal a fitted interior, characteristic of a tea caddy or sewing box, containing five small drawers fitted with brass knobs, alongside several fixed compartments.
