Lot 208:
A Group of Circa 1755 English Pottery Cups, of Varying Styles
Description
A group of Circa 1755 English pottery cups, comprising five individual examples of varying styles and decorations. One cup features a purple transferware Chinoiserie scene, while another exhibits a grey/black transferware landscape. A third cup displays a blue transferware Chinoiserie or Oriental landscape pattern. A fourth cup has a white body with blue underglaze floral decoration. The fifth cup, of fluted form, is decorated with polychrome floral motifs and gilding, and bears a small blue mark on its base. This style of fluted, gilt-decorated cup is often associated with late 18th-century English porcelain manufacturers such as Caughley and Worcester. Visible tags on some cups include ‘c.1770’, ‘Liverpool’, ‘probably pearlware’, and ‘pre-industrial’, suggesting late 18th to early 19th-century English ceramic production for certain examples.
